What Makes Nick at Nite Special

It quite often that you hear people say a network has changed, and you wonder why people criticize it. Normally, you can understand where they come from. Networks sometimes make poor decisions. But, when I hear people criticize Nick at Nite, I simply wonder why. Hello, I’m Jessica Kasumi and welcome to Jessica Kasumi’s Thoughts, the blog written by a goof with a blunt view of the world.

Sometimes I watch old Nick at Nite promotions, interstitials, and what have you on the glorious website that is YouTube and I sometimes see in the comments that Nick at Nite sucks now. Why is that? I believe some people feel that way because the Nick at Nite of the 2000s and beyond don’t air Classic TV. Here’s the kicker to me, I get the argument. But, I don’t agree with the argument. You see, when Nick at Nite aired the classics back in the 80s and 90s, there wasn’t a network for them, as most broadcast networks had no desire to air what they had produced decades earlier. So, Nick at Nite filled that niche market, and so did its sister network, TV Land.

As television and cable expanded, we began getting digital channels to host these classics. And Nick at Nite hasn’t completely forgotten its idea, it just airs more modern classics. Most networks have to keep up with the time. If you have digital channels like Antenna TV, why over saturate the market? Networks often change to reflect changing demographics. The people who often criticize don’t understand that television patterns change with each passing seasonal cycle. It’s just natural, so before you criticize a network for going against what it did, please remember something vital.

You don’t work in telecommunications, you don’t have control of the network. You can speak your mind, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with forming an opinion. But, you have to know your place and understand how television works. Nick at Nite evolved to air classics that newer generations consider classic similar to how people of the 80s and 90s saw shows from the 50s and 60s as a classic. It’s just the natural evolution of each new generation. Plus, they run advertisements. How many companies today are gonna want to advertise on a block or channel that airs the classics? Some to be sure, but, not as many as one might think.

Today, Nick at Nite airs more recent shows that the most recent generation grew up with and they find classic. It may not be classic to you, but, it is classic to someone. Never knock someone for having a different opinion than you.

With that, I’ll leave it here. I plan to write more from time to time. Many projects on this blog include an upcoming post that will be about the Rise and Fall of BET. To various other miscellaneous projects. I hope to share them with you. Take care and have a good one.
